Affected Area
Jaw joint, cheeks, temples, ears and neck
Common In
People who clench or grind, have jaw overload or associated neck tension
OVERVIEW
Understanding jaw tension
The temporomandibular joints connect the lower jaw to the skull, while several muscles control opening, closing and chewing. Jaw tension may involve these muscles, the joints, teeth or bite and is sometimes grouped under temporomandibular disorders. Symptoms can include pain near the ear, clicking, restricted opening, facial fatigue or headache. Because tooth infection, dental wear and other conditions can cause similar symptoms, assessment may need to involve a dentist or GP.

POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTORS
What may be involved
Jaw symptoms can come from the joint, surrounding muscles, teeth or referred pain. A combined dental and musculoskeletal approach is sometimes appropriate.
Jaw Muscles
Repeated clenching, grinding or prolonged chewing can fatigue the masseter and temple muscles and make opening or biting uncomfortable.
Temporomandibular Joint
The jaw joint may click, feel sensitive or temporarily lock when joint movement or the disc within the joint is not working smoothly
Teeth, Bite & Dental Health
Cracked teeth, dental infection, bite changes or wear from grinding require dental assessment and cannot be diagnosed through a neck examination.
Neck & Head Position
Neck pain and jaw tension can coexist, and reduced neck movement or muscle guarding may influence how the jaw region feels.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is jaw clicking always a problem?
Not always. Clicking without pain or locking can be common, but new, painful or worsening clicking should be assessed, especially if opening becomes restricted.
Can teeth grinding cause headaches?
Clenching or grinding can contribute to temple, jaw and facial muscle pain and may occur with headaches. A dentist can check for tooth wear and whether a protective splint is suitable.
Do I need a mouthguard?
A dentist should assess whether a splint or mouthguard is appropriate. Over-the-counter devices are not suitable for every jaw or bite pattern.
Can neck treatment help jaw tension?
Neck and jaw symptoms can coexist. Treating relevant neck or muscle findings may support comfort for some people, but it does not replace dental assessment when teeth, bite or joint pathology is suspected.
When is jaw pain an emergency?
Seek emergency care for dislocation, major trauma, breathing or swallowing difficulty, or jaw discomfort with possible heartattack symptoms. Facial swelling, fever or severe tooth pain needs urgent dental or medical review.
