Hand Tingling
Hand tingling may come from a nerve in the neck, elbow, forearm or wrist, but it can also have medical causes. At Spine & Strength Chiropractic in Craigieburn, we perform neurological screening and recommend GP or specialist referral when required.
Typical Recovery
May be intermittent or persistent; depends on the underlying cause
Affected Area
One or more fingers, palm or whole hand; sometimes arm
Common In
Desk users, drivers, manual workers, people with night symptoms or nerve irritation
OVERVIEW
Understanding hand tingling
Tingling, pins and needles or numbness occurs when sensory nerves are irritated, compressed or affected by another condition. The distribution matters: thumb-side symptoms can follow a different nerve pathway from little-finger symptoms, while a cervical nerve may create sensations from the neck into the arm and hand. Persistent symptoms, weakness, loss of coordination or symptoms in multiple limbs require prompt medical assessment.

POSSIBLE CONTRIBUTORS
Where symptoms may be coming from
Upper-limb symptoms may involve more than one structure. Assessment considers local tissues, connected joints, nerve pathways, workload and recovery capacity.
Neck & Nerve Roots
Cervical nerve irritation can cause tingling, numbness, pain or weakness that travels into the arm and hand.
Median Nerve & Carpal Tunnel
Median nerve compression at the wrist often affects the thumb, index and middle fingers and may be worse at night.
Ulnar Nerve
Ulnar nerve irritation near the elbow or wrist can affect the ring and little fingers and may reduce fine hand control.
Other Medical Causes
Diabetes, vitamin deficiency, circulation problems, medication effects and neurological conditions can also cause tingling.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Does hand tingling mean carpal tunnel syndrome?
Not always. The neck, elbow, wrist and medical conditions can all produce similar symptoms. Finger distribution and neurological testing help narrow the pattern.
Why is tingling worse at night?
Sleep position can place the wrist, elbow or neck in positions that increase nerve pressure. Night symptoms are common in carpal tunnel but are not diagnostic by themselves.
Can a chiropractor assess hand tingling?
A chiropractor can perform musculoskeletal and neurological screening and determine whether supportive care or medical referral is appropriate
What if I am dropping objects?
Reduced grip or dropping objects may indicate motor-nerve involvement and should be assessed promptly
Will imaging show the cause?
Sometimes, but not always. Depending on the pattern, a GP may consider blood tests, imaging or nerve-conduction studies
